Bringing the blog back in 2013

I am excited to finally get back to blogging in 2013 after over a year away! New Year's is great as I think it compels many of us to think about accomplishments or lack there of from the last year and the year ahead. For me, 2013 is the year I turn 30! Which scares the crap out of me of course and really makes me think about all the goals and dreams I have for the future and that its time to get serious about them so I don't wake up someday and realize that too much time has passed me and I haven't gone after them! Creating a great blog where I share my passion for great style and design is definitely at the top of my list!

There are many fun condo design projects at the top of my to do list in 2013 f that have been put off for far too long:
1.) Den Design
2.) Paint Condo (Living room, kitchen, bathroom, bedroom)
3.) Living Room Wall Frame installation
4.) Kitchen and living room built-ins

And of course highlighting progress around from these projects and many other fabulous design inspiration along the way on this blog!

For starters I worked on my den while I had a few days off of work over new years. I've lived here for over 2 year and done nothing with this space.

Here  is the before space:

Here is some work in progress--Still very rough. My plan is to take some great Ikea PAX closet frames and work with a carpenter to use them for a custom built-in look in. I'll put doors on the PAX cabinets that you see below and span custom built floating shelves across the 2 cabinets. I also am trying to decide on a great wallpaper that will go behind the shelving to really add a pop to this small space. I am not loving any of the options below though.

The carpenter came over this weekend so I am excited to keep the progress going on this project and turn it into a really gorgeous, high functioning space!

Here are some great office design inspirations!

This gorgeous space designed by Todd Davis Architecture is one of my absolute favorites and clearly where I found some inspiration.

This space by CONTENT Architecture is another great innovative use of limited condo space for a loft in Houston. I love all the amazing storage they've been able to incorporate while also being able to completely close off the space and have it take on the identity of a closet.

Its begining to look a lot like. . .

Ok so I know its far too early to start thinking of Christmas for most people, but I for one am pretty excited for at least the holiday decorating season to begin. Work has been nuts the last week so I wanted to at least share some beautiful holiday decor inspiration with you tonight!

First off, look at the lovely holiday arrangements outside the entrance of my condo building! I love how they filled the entire plant bed space we have. It really delivers major impact as you approach the entrance.

Second, I spotted these great letter wreaths from Ballard designs over the weekend.

'
Fresh Cedar Alphabet Wreath

What a fun spin on the traditional holiday wreath! I love this idea for inside or out and the price is right at $39.00. I think this could also be a fun DIY project using either natural or synthetic greens. I plan to try my hand at my own version of this as I do some decorating over the thanksgiving weekend. I'll definitely share the results with you.

Condo Design Update

I can't wait to finish decorating my living room. So far I have been gradually acquiring core furniture pieces, but have yet to layer in any color or accessories. With the holidays approaching, I'd like to make some progress on this space so I can enjoy entertaining over the next few months. Here some sneak peak pics of the progress I've made so far.

Here is the design palette. I have two goals for this space: Beauty and Function. My condo is just under 1,000 square feet so I need  to maximize the square footage without sacrificing great design. This Room and Board sectional sofa gives me the best of both worlds: great design, comfort and lots of seating. I would like to incorporate a glass coffee table like the one shown below because its takes up minimal visual space and yet has great character with the blonde wood and metal hinge hardware. This palette combines layers of color including warm gray-brown neutrals, white and yellow. And the design plan incorporates furniture and decorative accents of brass, chrome, ebony and blonde woods and regency inspired textiles.

What do you think of this scheme? What about the yellow and gray neutrals. I'd love to hear!!

Chic Genius: CAKE Paper Placemats

I stopped in at West Elm over the weekend and the store looked beautiful! All decked out for the holidays. What caught my eye more than holiday decor however was these ingenious paper placements by CAKE!
I love the place setting and silverware designs. What a chic but incredibly practical table top solution.  They come in 50 sheet tablets and as I recall the price was around $20.00. This could be fun to even incorporate into your holiday tabletop decor.

Chicago Spaces

I received one of the best surprises outside my door after work today. A box with some great books I ordered from Amazon.com. Well, I guess it wasn't that much of a surprise since I've been tracking them since the moment they shipped, but none the less, still pretty exciting. So tonight have been gushing over the pages of Chicago Spaces, inspiring interiors.

This book is fabulous. It showcases some gorgeous homes that range from mid-century modern to eclectic transitional to vintage glamor. One of the standout spaces is this Gold Coast condo designed by Nate Berkus.

I adore this sofa. The nail-head detail at the bottom that absolutely makes the piece. WOW! I am just crazy enough to wonder if I could do this to my own sofa--but I'll keep wondering for now. I also love how the slate blue color plays off the warm tones in the rest of the space. I am always a fan of painting the back of bookcases like they have here for an added pop of color. Remember its just paint!

The detail that really draws me into this dining space is the upholstery on the backside of the chairs. This is such a dramatic detail that is easily done with a little director to your upholsterer. This space is adjacent to the den above so the colors really flow nicely from one room to the next.

A few more spaces throughout this condo above. Notice the yellow Jonathan Adler wallpaper used, its dramatic but flows with the color scheme used throughout the space. My only critique is, it looks like its done in two rooms. I would suggest stopping in just one for maximum impact.

The book also breaks out specific areas throughout the home and highlights beautiful examples of these spaces. I was particularly drawn to the chapter on foyers. I think its can be one of the most exciting and also challenging spaces to design in a home. Not to mention its the first space you see when you arrive home and the last space you see as you leave, so needless to say it counts! Many foyers or entries are small or barely exist at all so its a challenge to carve out space to still make the entry special. Others are often very large and easily become just hallways to pass through. So the challenge is there to create a dynamic and welcoming space that draws you in.
This foyer featured in the book provides of a strong example of how to create a grand entry despite not having much floor space to work with. This is a common problem in many condos, apartments and older homes. The door opens right up against a wall and there isn't room for a sizable console or entry table. Here they use a skinny bench, treating it like a table and hang an over-scale painting above to still achieve a prominent sense of entry.

This is another foyer featured in the book that is absolutely stunning. This would be one of those larger spaces that could feel like an empty hallway. Instead they have treated every surface and created a warm space that draws you in through the color palette, use of lighting, and large scale art work.

Foyer by J. Weiss Design via Houzz

This is an entry space I found on HOUZZ that provides ingenious storage despite minimal wall or floor space to work with. I love the functionality here that still looks very chic and modern.

I've put together a few small space solutions to add design and functionality to your entry way. Think about achieving a similar look as the one above in your home with the use of slim shelving or cubbies and maybe even a wall mounted coat rack. I love this sleek piece below that can hide all your clutter.

Here is another piece shown below that provides a similar option in a neutral colorway.

Look at these fabulous coat racks from Blu Dot

What a fun way to store guest coats but also add a colorful design element to a small entry space.

Finally I love these Slim Console tables by Room and Board. They come in a huge range of sizes with depths as slim as 6"!! That is workable in even the tighest spaces. The price is right too, all under $200 bucks!

What do you think of these spaces? I love to hear! Hope you've gotten some great inspiration for your entry space!

Home Office: Before

The last month of my life has been incredibly busy. A very hectic time at work, lots going on with friends and family and my own personal pursuits have all kept me going almost non-stop. One of the things that I am enjoying most amongst it all the craziness is spending time dedicated to writing this blog. I used to spend time pouring over great design magazines, reading other blogs and creating concept boards for design projects. Now I still do all of that, but I have a great outlet where I can pull all of my thoughts together and share them with you.

While my creative pursuits appear to be a bit more organized in the online world, behind the scenes in my condo, they're still not. So its time to get the wheels in motion and turn my black whole of a "den" into a real home office. Organized and beautiful! I already showed you one concept I've put together for the design, but I am still exploring options.

I am embarrassed to show you its current state, but in the spirit of having a great before and after to show you down the road--I'll risk it. Here is the before.

Yikes. I warned you. This is the view as your are standing outside the sliding barn door.

Unfortunately right now my design budget is stretched very thin so this will be a work in progress. And organization will take top priority, then we'll upgrade into the design must haves. I picked up a little Ikea desk which you can see in the pic above. Its very basic but provides a large work surface and will do for a while. I would love to find something like any of the amazing desks I've highlighted below at an estate sale or auction. The 1st dibs price tags attached to these beauties definitely wont fit into my budget right now. Even though I can't have them, I can still admire and share them with you. Enjoy, while I am off to make a little calm out of caos in that soon to be home office.

Isn't this piece stunning? I love the dark metal top against the gilt gold bronze finish on the legs and of course the lattice pattern seals the deal. What a great desk!

I am always drawn to sawhorse or trestle leg desks. The architectural element of the legs just seem very unexpected and unique.

A Late 1960s/Early 1970s Waterfall Desk/Console Table via 1st Dibs
This desk is a bit more unusual for my taste. I just find it very simple and elegant. The white and silver finish help it get noticed where it might otherwise blend into the background.

Another trestle desk I cant resist. The white laquere and shiny chrome give a really modern and glamorous appeal. The drawer storage is an added bonus.
Henredon Olive Green Oil Drop Lacquer Campaign Desk via 1st dibs

This is another desk that really caught my eye. The unusual olive green color combined with the gold metal legs give it a very vintage feel, but also really elegant and proper. The gold ring pull hardware details take this piece to the next level. I am in love!

Seattle Shops Vintage

Yesturday I visited some great antique and vintage shops with my brother. We spent our time in an area of Seattle called Georgetown which is 5 miles south of downtown and Seattle's oldest residential neigborhood. Its a mix of industrial business, a developing retail district and a great creative community with artist studios and small store front shops.

One of the shops I enjoyed was Kirk Albert Vintage Furnishings. Check out a few photos from the shop. Lots of interesting reclaimed and re-worked industrial metal and wood pieces that take on a whole new life thanks to Kirk's creative artistry

My favorite shop from our visit to Georgetown was Susan Wheeler Home. Her shop is stunning, a dynamic mix of glamourous vintage furniture pieces, mid century glass, and rough hewn industrial signs and deocorative objects that all combine to create her beautifully unique design aesthetic. Check out a few photos from her incredible shop below.
